Scotch 82 Social Media Decision Making Practical Example

SCOTCH 82 SOCIAL MEDIA DECISION MAKING

with 2020 Update.

COVID-19 Extension decided by our Scotch 82 Active Admins Group.

Scotch 82's Jim Glaspole and Andrew Evans made a very courageous proposal to Investigate The Need For a Separate facebook Group, to our Scotch 82 facebook page, that proved it was possible to help our Classmates to embrace Social Media as a part of the Scotch Family and Old Boy Pastoral Care paradigm, that has been developing, for the 21st Century, in leaps and bounds.

Lots of discussions took place, with the most important revolving around helping each other come to grips with the difficulties some of our Classmates faced during out time at Scotch, and since.

NOT EVER ISSUE HAS BEEN RESOLVED, even as we are approach our 40 Year Reunion, however, we've made a gallant effort to ensure everyone in our Year Group got a chance to voice their opinions, feelings, and thoughts, and receive Tangible Support!

Subsequently, both Jim and Andy got an opportunity to Propose a Group, and then Admin/Lead the Group, as they felt able, which provided confidence for other Classmates to speak-up and be Supported and Care for.

Facebook Groups have evolved significantly between the time Andy and Jim made their proposal, as  has OSCA's approach to Pastoral Care Social Media type Groups, with OSCA Connect Groups having emerged!

A big "THANK-YOU" to our OSCA 2020/21 President, Andrew Wilson, who took up the challenge of helping us format what an "Online Campfire" might look like!

Andrew was able to provide input from his many years on OSCA Council, and his extensive Scotch Family and OSCA Community working knowledge helped our Classmates to be involved, with confidence, and most importantly to believe that we all can help shape OSCA's Social Media and Pastoral Care, when we Speak Up.

As mentioned in our 2020 End of Year Wrap "Equal Chief Editors Report" (see ->  https://scotch82wrap2020.blogspot.com/2020/03/scotch-82-wraps-2020-milestone-3.html ), our Scotch 82 Friendship Group has now been Archived, with no objections from Jim, Andy, and Andrew, or any of our Friendship Group Members, as a part of achieving MILESTONE 3, using a Rapid Prototyping approach to identifying our Year's Social Media requirements (between Reunions).

Our Social Media Group Support approach will now continue in our Scotch 82 Active Admins (Secret) Group, with our Active Admin Group Members no longer being made public, which is an update to our facebook Groups Support and Care initiative, for 2020, 2021, and 2022 (at this stage).

THANK-YOU Scotch 82 Friendship Group Members for being willing to Support and Care for each other, as we set out to help each other Reconnect, Reconcile, and Reunite, with the help of Social Media!

It's a Social Media Adventure that we've been undertaking, since 2012, and it's one Peer Groups have taken up too as we seek to help meet each others needs, and bring down Australia's Male Suicide rate even further towards Zero!

(Please also check out this additional link for Equal Admin learning experiences/education opportunities -> https://www.facebook.com/community/education)
We want to see all our Classmates have the opportunity to grow and thrive together with our Scotch Family "Deo Patriae Litteris" motto uniting us more than ever!
Thanks to Facebook for their Support and Care towards Scotch 82 Equal Admins, and for providing the Scotch Family will access to this great Social Media/online campus initiative!

A practical Example of Social Media Decision Making.

Aim: To ensure an opportunity for a New Scotch 82 Friendship Group Proposer & Seconder coming forward, with confidence, to help Keep Active a Group Support and Care initiative as ongoing, as we head towards our next 10 Year Reunion, in 2022.

Compassionate Peer Group Support...

Scotch 82 Year Peer Group Support is about Peer Group Friendships developing as a result of our Scotch 82 Year Group Support Initiatives.

Our Classmates have also re-established friendships from our Scotch School Days as well as making new friends!

Peers benefit from Care & Support whether they are giving or receiving it, similar to that occurring at our Scotch 82 Individual focused/Peer Group/Year Group Get-togethers.

Additionally, Peer Group Get-togethers may occur based around a common interest, resulting from being in touch using Scotch 82 Social Media and/or OSCAnet & OSCAconnect resources.

Peer Group Pastoral Care may be mutually offered and reciprocated, with or without outside assistance (from OSCA's Whole of Life & Life Transitions type initiatives).

Some of our Classmates have tracked down old friends via other Social Media sites, and it's important that they have a safe place for them to share their experiences, and for this reason it's become important we have Community guidelines, like that provided by facebook, for how classmates who have stepped up to be Admins can resolve any issues between Classmates, that may arise.

Get backing in contact with Classmates has proven to be an anxious time for many of us, and some Classmates just simply do not like the idea of trying to address the issues that arise from our time at Scotch.  That's okay, and this article about the Benefits of Having Social Media friends may be of some help to being able to address this challenge, between Reunions.

Archive, Delete or Keep Active our Scotch 82 Friendship (Secret) Group...

Facebook allows for a Group to be Archived or Deleted!

Under our Scotch 82 Guidelines, Scotch 82 (as an Admin, with the Support of our Scotch 82 Active Admins Group) can Delete the Group if there is a Proposer and Seconder to support deleting it and there are no objections, or we can simply Archive the Group, as the other option.

Obviously deleting a Group means there is no chance of it being made an Active Group again, where as Archiving the Group give us the option to make it Active again, at a later date.

Our Scotch 82 Friendship facebook (Secret) Group was created on August 26, 2014.

The Group was Proposed by Andrew Evans and Jim Glaspole, which also included discussions with Andrew Wilson (OSCA's Senior Vice President), Mick Arnott, and Scotch 82 Classmate participants.

Considerations need to be taken into account before an Upcoming Announcement can be made about the future of our Scotch 82 Friendship Group, as it may indirectly affected other Year Group facebook/Social Media Groups!

OSCA now use Social Media as a part of it's Strategic Planning, and Decision Making.

Our Year Group decision making takes into account how OSCA utilizes Social Media, and in response to OSCA's Trust Principle (for Year Groups to create their own approach to Connecting & staying in touch using Social Media), we created some Scotch 82 Guidelines -> https://www.facebook.com/pg/Scotch1982/photos/?tab=album&album_id=760134317451272

Thank-you to everyone who has participated in successfully "Investigating the Need for A Separate Support Group to Scotch 82"!

Keeping our Scotch 82 Friendship Group Active perhaps best comes down to reflecting on the importance of how our Year Group fits into OSCA's Pastoral Care Objectives.

As a Year, we have taken some time to consider how we fit into our Scotch Family (as well as  Associated Public Schools of Victoria) Pastoral Care perspectives, see our "Scotch 82 Q & A 2019 Update" blog here -> https://scotch82qandaupdate2019.blogspot.com/2019/11/scotch-82-q-2019-update-pastoral-care.html

Treating each other as Equal Classmates and Scotch Family Members...

As a Year Group, using Social Media, we endeavor to give every Classmate the opportunity to think about, explore, and discuss the decisions being made, that affect our Year, and as members of the Scotch Family, and ensuring the decisions have been made with the opportunity to voice objections.

Our Scotch 82 Analytics and Posting Guide his an example of how we provide our Classmates (and interested Scotch Family) with some insight into how we collectively can review the type of responses we get to our Scotch 82 facebook website/page Posts.

With this review in hand, we can then go about helping to improve our Classmates' Social Media connection with our Scotch Family, and also hopefully identify and address further what expectations we might have about our Social Media Adventure together (see more here -> https://scotch82analytics.blogspot.com/).

https://www.facebook.com/Scotch1982/photos/a.408770385921002/1150662708398429/?type=3&theater

To help ensure everyone is aware of what is being discussed, and decided on, we create Posts on our Scotch 82 facebook Page that can also be shared in our Scotch 82 (Secret) Groups, as well as send out our Scotch 82/Scotch College Class of 1982 End of Year Wrap.

Decision Making as Equal Admins...

Please refer to previous Scotch 82/Scotch College Class of 1982 End of Year Wraps, which have provided an outline and overview of the decisions and proposals that have been made to initially start our Scotch 82 facebook page, create some Scotch 82 Guidelines, and then propose and link Scotch 82 Secret Groups, primarily using facebook's platform.

Here are the links to our End of Year Wraps:

Each Year, at least once a Year, we take a fresh look at OSCA's Social Media Strategic Planning, as released formally in their "OSCA Annual Reports", that are posted on our OSCAnet website (see link here -> https://oscanet.com.au/#oscaannualreports)

OSCA Annual Report Update...

OSCA's Strategy for 2020 to 2024 is now out in their 2018-19 Annual Report (https://ap.ptly.com/vic/scotch/uploads/files/OSCA_Annual_Report_2019.pdf), and it's possible to see how our Scotch 82 Friendship (Secret) Group kinda fits in (especially between 10 Year Reunion Events)!
What remains to be discussed is how facebook Group Admin Training will benefit our Scotch 82 (Secret) Groups, and this will take place in the 2020 New Year, before a decision is made to Keep Active, Archive or Delete this group.
Please join our Scotch 82 Active Admins Group to be a part of that discussion, by getting in contact with our Membership Admin, Mark Learner.
Thanks Friends!

Great Encouragement (& Litteris) from Facebook...
Speaking up and using our Voice was a feature of our Scotch College, Melbourne Student days (like via the General House Committee), and again today we are actively looking to support each other as Equals.
As a Year, we want to help support Old Scotch Collegians' Association community building activities, and by continuing to be inclusive, the Classmates of '82 will benefit greatly from our collective Social Media and online learning experiences, and subsequently the Scotch Family and APS Schools.

The Associated Public Schools of Victoria Heads endorsed a "APS Sport Inclusion Framework" in September 2018 (see -> https://www.apssport.org.au/policies/).

Most of the APS Schools also have Alumni pages on facebook (and connected websites) that share regular updates on important decisions, and how they go about making those decisions.

For our Year, this also means continuing to be a part of our Scotch Family's focus on providing life long learning via global Social & Business networking opportunities for Old Boys, like never before!

Scotch 82 as Admin and Group Members as Admin...

(please refer to "Archive, Delete or Keep Active our Scotch 82 Friendship (Secret) Group...")

Currently, because our facebook groups have been linked to our Scotch 82 page (which also acts as a kind of fail safe), "Scotch 82 Page Admins" can post to our Scotch 82 Groups as Scotch 82.

My personal experience is that I have mistakenly shared a Scotch 82 facebook page post as Scotch 82, rather than as personal facebook profile "Michael Arnott", to our Scotch 82 Friendship Group when I was a Group Admin.

As I am currently also a Scotch 82 Active Admins (Secret) Group member, this means I can fix the problem by removing that post as Scotch 82, and this Activity gets recorded, as in the "Moderate Group" option, which is visible to Group Admins.

As an example of what Group Activity looks like, below is an illustration of how to see what Activity has been going on in the Group, as Admin, but Group Members do not have this option, at this point in time.

It's possible to delete Comments or Posts, if they do not comply with Group Rules, as a Group Admin.

We currently have not decided upon a set of Group Rules for any of our facebook Groups, but this will form part of our review in our Scotch 82 Active Admins Group, when we take a look at facebooks Community Education and Training, in early 2020.

Clearly having a set of rules is considered by facebook to be an important function of being a Group Admin, and facebook do delete peoples posts on their individual pages, as well as suspend accounts, or ban people people from using facebook altogether!

It has also been my exeprience that Classmates have opted to hide their comments from some members of our Scotch 82 facebook groups, and so dealing with the motivation for creating this situation my also form part of having group rules, especially where those comments cause others concern, or cause them to have problems with Reconnecting, Reconciling and Reuniting, as we head towards our next 10 Year Reunion, in 2022.

Our Scotch 82 facebook page has "Scotch 82 Guidelines" (https://www.facebook.com/pg/Scotch1982/photos/?tab=album&album_id=760134317451272), which will also be reviewed as to how they might affect Group Members giving Group Admins the authority to Moderate Group Posts and Comments.

Question: "Is having Guidelines and Rules Micromanaging?

Answer: If facebook have decided, in their wisdom, to provide our Scotch 82 Page and Group Admins the ability to Moderate Posts and Comments, and we can agree to what constitutes a fair set of Rules for us all to our Classmates to follow, then perhaps "Micromanagement" is not the right word to be applying to Admins doing their agreed upon job.

Question: "What do I do if I don't agree with the facebook platform allowing for Rules to be created and agreed upon?"

Answer: Please contact facebook directly!  If your objection to facebooks user agreement is still not resolvable, then please consider talking to our Scotch 82 Support Influencers about what other Social Media platforms you fill would benefit the Scotch Family.

40 Year Reunion Committee Role...

A Guideline/Outline for our 40 Year Reunion Committee Role helps all us Classmates to get creative (having identified what is needed), in what we can do to ensure "The Big One" becomes a once in a lifetime memorable occasion for our year!

We also hope we are providing some value to our Scotch Family Reunion Planning as a whole by sharing our experiences of seeking to gather our year together, using Social Media themes and opportunities, on our quest.

Thank-you to our OSCA Junior Vice President Andrew Wilson, OSCA Coucillor James Gallacher, OSCA Executive Management, Scott Montgomery, our (10, 20, 30 Year) Reunion Committee, Ashley Murdoch, James Paterson, Mike Poynter, Robert Stock, our Scotch 82 Active Admins (Secret) Group, our Scotch College Class of 1982 (Secret) Group, our OSCA (Honourary) Chaplain Graham Bradbeer, and all our Classmates using Social Media, for the assistance and resources that have been pooled to come up with our 40 Year Reunion Committee Role!

Great Team Effort from all us Equal Old Boys!!

Thank-you also to Deborah Burley, past team member of OSCA Events Management, for all your friendly and supportive assistance too!!

Scotch 82's facebook page, OSCA & General House Committee Proposals...

Below is an picture of how I currently understand the way OSCA interacts with Year Group's Social Media Initiatives.
OSCA's Constitution points out the there are Members of the Council, and they act as Directors, under Australian Corporations Law.
OSCA's Council Members can call Meetings, and can form Committees, and some of them sit on the School Council, which is also made up of Presbyterian Church members.
Our OSCA Chaplain, and Scotch 82 Support Influencer, has influence as a Member of the Presbyterian Clergy, but does not sit on the OSCA Council, with a formal Position (at the present time), as far as I'm aware.
In a sense, Year Group Social Media Initiatives, like Scotch 82, are forums for discussion, and as individual Old Boys, we may have a formal OSCA Membership!

Our Scotch 82 facebook page is also a forum for our Classmates to have discussions about decisions that affected us as a year.

During our HSC year, in 1982, we had Minor House and Major House Group discussions, and Motions and Proposals for the General House Committee were made that way!

Proposals can also similarly be made to OSCA, and if Classmates need help formating their ideas into Proposals, or even Motions for our OSCA Councillors to be put forward can be discussed with our OSCA Executive Director, Scott Montgomery.

OSCA's Young Old Boys Committee...

On the OSCA YOBS facebook page, they describe themselves "An approachable community of young Scotchies." (see -> https://www.facebook.com/pg/oscayobs/about/?ref=page_internal)

The YOBS have also taken up the challenge of creating a Social Media platform to help Scotch's school leavers take advantage of the Connectedness they share as part of a using a New Generation of Communications.

James Zagame, our Scotch Family 2015 School Captain, outlines the benefits of using Social Media for our OSCA Young Old Boys, and how OSCA is doing a great job of considering the benefits to their life beyond Scotch, like at University, and when thinking about entering the Job Force -> https://www.facebook.com/oscayobs/videos/1002108256805936/

How our Scotch Family Young Alumni have taken to Scotch Family Social Media connectedness is a very important consideration for our Year Group, and our Decision Making!

Taking a Committee approach is something we did during our HSC and other Senior School years, in addition to debating and discussing important issues in House Meetings.  The General House Committee was an important forum that allow for the whole of the Senior School Student Body to Speak Up and be Heard, just as the YOBS Committee are speaking up and being heard too, on behalf of all Young Old Boys, by OSCA.

Original Scotch 82 Friendship (Secret) Group Proposal...

Jim Glaspole and Andrew Evans' proposal was that the "Scotch 82 Friendship Group investigate the need for a group that can focus on exploring individuals issues and needs that might otherwise get lost in a Social Media context."

If you have a new Friendship Group Proposal, in light of OSCA's New Strategic Plan for 2020 to 2024, then please have a chat to OSCA's Executive Director, Scott Montgomery, about what Scott and OSCA's Councilors can do to help you with the appropriate wording and proposal format that would best suit our Scotch Family, and will be of benefit to our Year Group, and/or your Peer Group.

Scotch 82 Support Influencers Involvement...

A copy of our YEAR GROUP Annual Get-together Outline appear on our Scotch 82 facebook page and in our Scotch 82 Active Admins (Secret) Group for our Classmates to consider and add their thoughts, ideas, and suggestion towards.

Also, a copy is sent to our Scotch 82 Support Influencers in Graham Bradbeer, Scott Montgomery, Andrew Wilson, and OSCA Collegians for their consideration and input.

Scotch 82 Peer Groups, that look to have they own Annual Get-together are also notified, and given a copy to consider, and they can make a Peer Group Plan, if needed!

Here is the Get-together Planning Outline we'll be following for 2020.

If you have any questions or suggestions please bring them up in our Scotch 82 Active Admins Group. Please get in contact with Mark Learner for Group Admin inquiries! Thanks!

"Service", what does it mean to be an Old Scotch Collegian in a time when we can learn so much from the Scotch Students of Today and their Teachers, and our Young Old Boys, in the midst of an Information Age?

If Jesus was a Servant Leader, are we being of Service to our Scotch Family by helping each other make our next 10 Year Reunion, in 2022?

What (further) service can we be to our Scotch Family, as a year group, using Social Media, as we continue to help new peer support and friendship groups develop?

Surveying our Classmates on Group Decisions...

Conducting a Survey about important Group Decisions maybe one way to help Admins come to a conclusion about the viability of a certain initiative, what most likely affect a decision may have on our Classmates, and Group participation dynamics.

OSCA have used their facebook page facilities (see below) to conduct surveys, and therefore survey results are considered to a helpful tool to them.

As recorded in our 2018 End of Year Wrap (see below), we too have used a similar sort of survey to help make an Inclusive facebook page name decision, when we conducted our "Scotch 82 vs Scotch College Class of 1982 Likes Cup" between December 2017 until August 2018 (facebook page post link ->  https://www.facebook.com/Scotch1982/photos/a.229404723857570/1319725074825524/?type=3&theater)

Prayer, perhaps the most important consideration...

When speaking about the importance of Prayer, Marilee Pierce Dunker, the daughter of World Vision founder Bob Pierce, says:

"The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) is Christ’s response. It is a beautiful prayer and one that every Christian should hide in their heart — I just challenged my granddaughter to memorize it. But elegant as the words are, I do not believe Jesus intended it to become another ritualistic prayer. Rather, it was to be an example of how to pray."
